Circle of Trust
Lots of people are frustrated with everything going on now a days. Last month in my opinion a few bad cops and the media created a hatred for police. While some changes and improvements might be needed within police departments it’s unfair to make blanket statements about an entire profession. As a teacher I feel like there is a good chance we will be next because a lot of people are fired up about kids going back to school. Like police officers, we are always in the public eye and often scrutinized and not respected by parents and community members. With emotions running wild and COVID tearing this country apart it could get worse in the next month. Over the past few days via social media I’ve heard a lot of negativity towards my profession but the one that really hit home was, “teachers are selfish for not wanting to go back to school” While it is not my intention to get pol⁸itical or ruffle feathers my building has several staff members that have health concerns, or are over 50. A first grade teacher has a 3 year old with some severe health issues and is terrified to go back. I dont know how not wanting to risk your life or the lives of your family is selfish. In the end, I dont care what side of the fence you stand on, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that’s what makes this country great. But as tensions rise I ask that you dont judge someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.

While I personally would like to see students back in school at least in some degree, I can’t blame some of my colleagues for being nervous about it and not wanting to go back. As I look at the news and social media it is very difficult to see strangers stereotype people in my profession, especially when most have not witnessed learning at an elementary school in at least 20 years. I have been in education for 13 years and the majority of teachers I come across are good and want what is best for kids. If my CoT was offensive to people who don’t agree that was not my intent. Thanks to everyone that came out.
