Introduction
I’ve Q’d La Luz before and attended several as well. I’m not too familiar with downtown Aurora so I decided to spread my wings a bit. However, there was an area near one of the parking garages that was down below New York Street and I wasn’t clear on how to find access. So, instead of doing recon a week before, I ended up doing it at about 420am the morning of. I drove to the area in question and found what I needed. After doing so, I got back into my car, turned around and headed to the AO for warm-ups. The first thing I noticed as I turned onto the street, on what was supposed to be a quite morning with little traffic, was three cars heading towards me…in ALL 3 lanes. Yep, driving the wrong way down a one way street. Not a fan of city driving and grew up in a very rural community. Guess you can take the man out of the country but not the country out of the man. Anyway, after some maneuvering, I made it back to the AO and started my warm ups wondering what else was in store for me. In the back of my mind I kept telling myself, “I hate one way streets” and “Don’t get lost during your Q”!
Weather: don’t remember the exact temp but it was perfect. Clear morning and somewhere around 50F real feel with no breeze.
No setup required for this one so I was able to greet some of the PAX I haven’t met before.
PAX in attendance (15): Aguila, Blow Dry (SQ), Chiva, Forrest Gump, Inchworm, Mr. Miyagi, One Bar, Richard Simmons, Roach Coach, Start Up, The Wedding Planner, Twilight (Q), Cricket, Goodwill, Irish Goodbye

The Thang
Moseyed from Flags to parking garage. I set out at a fast pace and those who arrived first continued with an exercise while waiting for the 6
Thang 1 – 5’s (just like 11’s only 5’s) at the top of the New York St Parking Garage
- Prisoner Cell Merkin Burpees (PCMB) & Walmart Burpees
Moseyed from garage thru a pedestrian breeze way (that was pretty cool) and found my way up to New York St (recon paid off, even if almost caused me a deductible to my car insurance).
Thang 2 – Railroads (was going to do this for all of the commuters to see but when I reached street level I realized that the sidewalk was narrow and right off the street and there were too many entrances/exits for cars along the sidewalk. Too risky for the PAX so we just ended up doing:
- H.R. Merkins 15x (4ct)
Moseyed to a parking lot on the east side of the river. Early arrivals had more work to do as we waited for the 6
Thang 3 – The Brenton* (modified)
- Standing broad jump 88 yrds (3 burps every 5 Broad Jumps)
- Bear Crawl 88 yrds
- Those that finished early did Fox Holes until all completed the Thang
Thang 4 – Dutch Skaters (in cadence) Ran out of time for this one so we did an Indian Run north along the river, west across the bridge and back to the Flags. Again, first to arrive had extra duty until 6 arrived.
Thang 5 – Jack Webb
- 1:4 Blockee and Overhead Clap (OHC)
- Made it to 6 and 24
Thang 6 -Burpees
- Had a couple of minutes left so we all did 6ct Burpees until 0600
6MoM – No formal Mary today but definitely had a lot of core work throughout the boot camp.

CoR/Announcements/NoR/Prayer Request
For CoT’s, I’ve been mentioning things that I find and share with my two daughters. It’s at an eye-rolling stage now with my girls as I do this about once a week at the dinner table but I figure if I keep talking to them, SOMETHING will seep through into their teenage brains 🙂 Keep talking to them as they need our guidance and, more importantly, they need to know we love them.
- “You, me or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much can you take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!” – Rocky Balboa
- Navy SEALs say when you’re under pressure you don’t rise to the occasion, you sink to the level of your training. Train well! School, work, relationships, sports, working out, CPR, etc…
- If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it.
- If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.
- If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place
Finally, I bring this out on occasion to different AO’s. It’s a good reminder to not compare yourself to others. Just try to make yourself better, a little at a time. Maybe good advice for FNG’s on their first bootcamp and maybe their first workout in decades.
DFL>DNF>DNS
Dead Frickin Last > Did Not Finish > Did Not Start
Congratulations. We all were better than the DNS as we all avoided the dreaded fartsack and showed up. Gains don’t happen fast. Stick with these workouts and you will go from not finishing to dead last to the middle or front of the pack. DNS should not be an option.
*The Brenton: In honor of Field Training Officer Timothy Quinn Brenton, 39, of the Seattle PD, was shot and killed in a drive by shooting while on duty 31Oct2009. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
Naked Man Moleskin
Loved how this group worked along side the 6 to encourage them to complete the Thangs. Don’t just rely on the site Q. Step up and encourage a brother who needs it.
Goodwill….holy cow. During The Brenton, that kid’s broad jump was ridiculous! Needs to be renamed Frogger or something. Kid’s a beast and breezed through that Thang and left me just shaking my head. Well done!
Thanks to Blow Dry for making sure I didn’t get us lost and to Roach Coach who helped reorganize the impromptu Indian Run. Be prepared, be confident but also be willing to listen and take the advice of the good men around you.
Always a pleasure to work alongside you all!
