Introduction

YHC gave a pretty mysterious preblast lacking in details. I did mention we would emphasize speed & agility…and that at some point we would let the gazelles fly.

The Slack thread was quite active and a few new faces decided to come out.

Warm-O-Rama

  • Short mosey to Indigo parking garage
  • 20 seconds to line up by birth month WITHOUT TALKING
    • 5 penalty burpees (all part of the warm up ; )
  • Imperial walkers 1/2 way up the ramp; lunge-walks the rest
  • Game time!

The Thang

Thang 1

  1. Bernie Sanders sprints up the ramp in sets of THREE
  2. after three, Dr. W IC x 5-7
  3. Repeato, subbing in Absolution for Dr. W
  4. We got in 4 sets (12 sprints) plus 4 sets of abs before…
  5. Transition at 0525

Thang 2 (the real fun)

  1. Stair sprint variations
    1. Sprint all the way up 6 flights, then mosey down for 25 seconds of rest.
    2. Variations:
      1. Quick step (touch every step)
      2. Skip step
      3. Right Leg Hop up 33 steps (~1/2 up)
      4. Left leg hop up the rest
      5. Side step RF lead
      6. Side step LF lead
      7. REPEATO!

Most PAX were able to run the full set of 6 variations almost two full times.

Thang 3: PMDS

Perpetual motion with Dynamic Subordination

This is something I’ve been working on recently. A new training method I believe is not only challenging, but also fun and rewarding. Here’s how it works:

Groups of 5-7 line up. PMDS is similar to an Indian run in that the person in the back sprints up to the front. However, it is completely different because the next person in the back doesn’t wait for previous PAX to reach the front; instead, he immediately loops out and sprints to the front as soon as the PAX behind him passes by his side. In this way it is less of a “line” run and more of an oval moving in perpetual motion.

Dynamic subordination means whoever is in front of the line at any given moment gets to decide where to go. All PAX are aware of the final destination, and usually a rough time-line, but the route is not predetermined. Dynamic subordination comes from Navy Seal training and operations, where the leader of the group is not necessarily the Q (or the highest ranking officer), rather the right person in the right position at the right time. In this way all members of the team are leaders and capable of making split second decisions.

Just for fun, and in honor of the Navy Seals, I usually suggest to PAX that PMDS is done in SILENCE. Non-verbal instructions are used to navigate.

In conclusion, the twin goals of PMDS are to move as swiftly & silently as possible.

Today, we ran PMDS for about 11 minutes, ending at 0600 at the flags. PAX were pretty quick, so I estimate any where from 1.5-2.25 miles were covered in this way.

Circle of Trust

It’s easy to look around and see how advanced we are. Our advances in all industries seems limitless, our progress seems unique, and our times “special”

This may be the case for the things we have created, but what about us as humanity?

As an avid student of history, the more I read the more I realize how little we’ve changed as people throughout the ages.

Psalm 12 was written ~2500 years ago, somewhere b/w 9th and 5th century BC, and I am convicted because I believe the themes still ring true. Here are some of the themes:

  • Disappearance of the godly man (also translated as the faithful man)
  • Flattering lips – aka telling others only what they want to hear
  • having a double-heart  – means having one heart for God (aka the “Sunday” heart), and another heart for the rest of our lives (aka the “weekday” or “workplace” heart)
  • The words of the Lord can be fully relied on, whereas the boastful words of the adversaries are completely futile.

Psalm 12

Plea for Help in Evil Times

Help, O Lord, for there is no longer anyone who is godly;
the faithful have disappeared from humankind.

They utter lies to each other;
with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.

May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
the tongue that makes great boasts,

those who say, “With our tongues we will prevail;
our lips are our own—who is our master?”

“Because the poor are despoiled, because the needy groan,
I will now rise up,” says the Lord;
“I will place them in the safety for which they long.”

The promises of the Lord are promises that are pure,
silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times.

You, O Lord, will protect us;
you will guard us from this generation forever.

On every side the wicked prowl,
as vileness is exalted among humankind.

I share this because I recently read it and it made me reflect on these questions:

  • Am I a faithful man?
  • In what ways do I lie and speak with “flattering lips?”
  • In what ways do I care for the needy & poor?

Naked Man Moleskin

I feel many PAX were disgruntled with today’s work out. At least there seemed to be a higher level of complaining than I’m used to. I take blame for this, and think it might have something to do with the way I framed (or failed to frame) the work out. I’ll keep working on that.

In other news, it’s good to know that hopping up stairs on one leg still sucks an awful lot.
