Circle of Trust
I shared with the PAX how New Orleans has a special place in my heart for many reasons…
One it’s a place my brother Sean who past away a couple years ago loved to go. It’s also a place I’ve spent a decent amount of time on both business and personal trips.
One trip came to mind today and it’s when I met Scott Waddle, former captain of the nuclear submarine the USS Greenville. This was one of most highly decorated subs in the Navy. One day, the sub surfaced and accidently hit a Japanese fishing vessel. Nine people died.
The message I left with PAX had two parts:
- Don’t coast through life or make assumptions, pay attention, do your job, your duty to ensure safety, etc is in place
- If you do mess up…and you will in life…take responsibility. That’s what Scott Waddle did as captain. He lived with the death of these 9 people on his watch as his responsibility. He could have cast blame, etc. however he stood up and took it…as captain of the ship. This is The Right Thing to do.
He wrote a book about it if you’re interested. The Right Thing by Scott Waddle
