Introduction

So there we were, 11 PAX stumbling out of their vehicles at 5:10ish in the morning. It was dark. It was unexpectedly breezy. It was gimpy (Blowfish had his little scooter). It was perfect.

YHC had some new things in store for the men of Black Panther and we were excited to get the day started. Woody came in like a bee sting with sunglasses and all. Yeah, that’s right – playing it cool.

We weren’t sure, but we thought we could almost hear the cadence from the Citadel. Not surprising given a Choppy Q.

Blowfish and Elway repping the MASH team.

Onward!!

Warm-O-Rama

Capri Lap. Capri Scoot for Blowfish.

SSH (20). Overhead claps for Blowfish.

Sun Gods (arm circles). 10 forward and backward

Goofballs (20). Weird arm movements for Blowfish.

The Thang

Thang 1. (Elway and Blowfish took off for MASH).

  • Mosey to path.
  • 100 Grady Corns. (In memory of Grady Pitstick, aka “Quikrete”, who passed away a year ago. He was only 30 years old, and the son of another member of the Knoxville PAX, Brian Pitstick, aka “Sparkler”. “Grady Corn” is a a combination of Grady’s name and “Candy Corn”, which was an exercise Grady brought to us that became his trademark. It is a shoulder warm up that can become a full-on exercise with enough reps. Here is its description: Four-count exercise that begins in a standing position with your arms together, straight out in front of you. Swing your arms back to a “T” formation, then over your head to form a triangle, then back down to a “T”, and then back to the starting position. 25 reps makes for a good shoulder warm up. At 50 reps the mumblechatter starts to dwindle. Groans of pain begin at about rep 75, which should be taken by the Q as encouragement to keep going to 100.)
  • 100m bear crawl
  • 50 Mountain Man Poopers
  • 100m bear crawl

Thang 2.

  • Rolling Thunder (PAX line up in parking lot with coupon. Face perpendicular to length of lot. Start with 5 incline coupon merkins, then roll onto back towards speedbumps and perform 10 chest presses. Rinse and Repeat until you reach speed bumps.
  • Subprime appeared in disbelief he was actually doing this.
  • Tourniquet outraced us all and finished first (though physics played a part).
  • Pi one upped us all and did 10 merkins each time until he was 90% of the way and he figured out he only had to do 5
  • Woody came coupon less and subbed in LBC’s for the chest presses (you’re welcome)
  • Milton, Vern, P&R, & Motown dug deep, but YHC could hear the silent tears of manliness softly dropping onto the asphalt in a pitter patter of persistent pain.
  • YHC received loud accolades, praise, and compliments for this particular exercise.

Mary.

  • 100 LBCs
  • 15 E2K (elbow to knee oblique crunch) each side

THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU. It’s about those beside you. Goruck has a t-shirt that says this. The philosophy has a lot of synergy to what we do at F3. Which makes sense – both F3 and Goruck have their roots in the military, and the buddy system is famous for such a philosophy.

When we start F3 the easy desire is to come for the exercise, because getting out and working out have immense benefits. But I once heard Trickle describe F3 as a men’s leadership group disguised as a workout group. And this biggest, most important, single significant key to leadership is SERVING. You CANNOT be a leader if it’s ABOUT YOU.

We have the ultimate example of servant leadership through Jesus Christ. The moment he clothed himself as a servant and washed the muddy, dirt caked feet of the disciples – the common work of a servant or slave – he physically demonstrated what it meant to lead.

It’s easy to think about ourselves – to put ourselves first before others. For those of us married, this is a daily, living reality. But if we’re to become leaders, we must not only learn how to follow but we must learn how to serve.

Today think on an action we can take to demonstrate our leadership – and serve.
