This will be a workout focused on building muscle so Coupons required. Some moseys will be mixed in for active rest.

For those who haven’t experienced it yet, Fridays at La Luz is the like Vegas during the Super Bowl – the energy is 💯!

Circle of Trust

In brushing up on my Mexican history, I came across the story of Father Miguel Hidalgo. A Mexican revolutionary, he hardly fit the profile of someone who would take up arms against French  and Spanish oppression. Father Hidalgo was in his mid-50’s when he rang the church bell on September 16th, 1810 and announced to his flock that he would take up arms against the European power controlling Mexico.  He not only fought for independence but for racial equality and fair treatment of the poor.  Eventually Father Hidalgo was captured and executed.  He died an honorable death and remains a national hero to this day.

For me, the fascinating part of this story was not that a Catholic priest would go to war or that a relatively unknown man would lead a force against superior odds.  It was his AGE!  This was a quiet pastor who, at 50+ in the early 1800’s, was considered old and aged beyond value.  But, it was this man who sowed the seeds of revolution despite what others thought he should be.  Regardless of your politics or view of what or what not a clergy member should be, a lesson that cannot be overlooked is that you have the power to create change regardless of where you are in this life.  Do not let you job or age or place in society dictate what you know in your heart needs to be done.  When people tell you who you should be or how you should act based on census statistics, tell them to blow out their ass and live like Fr. Hidalgo.

Naked Man Moleskin

Today’s workout was about honoring and learning more about Mexican culture and the positive effect that it has had on the United States in particular.  With that, I decided to create a music playlist and provide some interesting trivia during the workout.  I appreciate the kind spirits and open minds that partied with me today.  Here are some highlights:

  1.  I started off by telling everyone that, though I’m a big Spanish music fan, most of my selections are things I heard in a boxing gym 15 years ago, at a kid’s birthday party, or a wedding.  As I don’t speak Spanish, these songs will most likely be either ridiculous or highly vulgar and I have no idea which.  Hell, I think one of the songs was in Italian but I’m not sure.  No one seemed too pissed about it so I think we did alright.
  2. 16 PAX and the temp was a balmy 4 degrees at the start!  The energy was insane from the get go but what do you expect with Aladdin and Sun Devil as your leaders.
  3. Bob Ross battled like a monster today.  See Fr Hidaglo’s story in COT.  If you weren’t thinking about Bob Ross while you read that, than you weren’t thinking.
  4. Brought back the EIL scissors today and hearing Blinky laugh during it was worth the frozen ass cheeks.  Watch the video posted by Sun Devil to see it in action.  Thanks for bringing a truly big Big Boy for me.  And yes, that crazy son of a b*tch was wearing shorts.
  5. Have you guys caught up with this PAX, Start Up?  7 weeks in, missed one day, lost 25 pounds so far, and a legit good dude to hang with.  He’s definitely going to be a candidate for the “1st Annual Nacho Libre presents the Reunite – damn that guy’s life changed” Award.  Yes, I’m creating this award right now and it will be presented by me with no cash prize on August 1st.
  6. Speaking of PAX who changed their lives, great seeing the walking talking inspirations of Blow Dry and Wedding Planner.
  7. Brown Out and Algorithm, great getting to know you both better today.
  8. Aguila (great karate kick), Abu, Berries, and Zubas just got the job done today.  Way to kick ass.
  9. Clearcoat and I reflected back on At At’s basketball Q at Launchpad this summer and both agreed that, though frost bite is super fun, we are looking forward to the summer workouts.
  10. Hats off to Sun Devil who got the hardest question of the day – Mexico’s most accomplished golfer? Lorena Ochoa (though it’s only because she went to the University of Arizona).
  11. Bjorn, it was awesome seeing you today and I really am sorry that you had to duplicate this nonsense again.  The silver lining though is you got to hear me try and sing Estoy Aqui by Shakira while building a bigger chest at the same time. Seems like a win on all fronts.
  12. Here are the rest of the facts and trivia from today:

Sports:

The first Mexican born baseball player was Baldemero Almada in 1933.  He got the last hit ever given up by Babe Ruth when he still pitched.  Not only that but he got 3 hits and 2 walks off the Babe that day.

Solly Garcia Smith “The Mexican Celtic” was the first US boxing champion of Mexican dissent winning the fly weight title in 1897.  Solly’s Dad was from Ireland and his Mom was from Mexico. Shockingly, he enjoyed fighting.

The greatest Mexican soccer player ever was Hugo Sanchez.  He made his mark as a striker for Real Madrid and was named to there all time 11 Team.

Lorena Ochoa is in the golf hall of fame.  She was the first Mexican golfer to hold the number 1 ranking and has the record for longest streak as #1.

Music:

3 #1 hits by Mexican performers in Spanish on the US Billboards top 100 – La Bamba (1987 version by Los Lobos), Macarena, and Despacito

Eres Tu – the Chris Farley and David Spade sang in the movie Tommie Boy peaked at  #9 in 1974.

Science:

Guillermo González Camarena invented color TV.

Juan Lozano invented the jet pack

Jose Hernandez was the first Mexican American astronaut

Ancient Mesoamericans living in what is now current day Mexico invented chewing gum, chocolate, popcorn, edible versions of corn, pumpkin, and vanilla

Politics:

Cinqo de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day.  Nor is it technically a day to celebrate drunken frat boys throwing back tequila shots instead of vodka for a day.  But rather, it is a day to honor and remember the 1862 Battle of Puebla in which General Zaragoza defeated an invading French army. Not only was this the first time the Mexican military defeated a European super power but they did so despite being out numbered 2 to 1 and woefully under equipped.  Though the French would eventually gain a foothold in Mexico, this loss and others like it convinced the French that even an attempt to conquer and hold Mexican territory would prove costly if not impossible.  The reason the French wanted to invade Mexico so badly was that it wanted to use it as a base to secretly support the Confederacy (a valuable trading partner) during the American Civil War.  Because of General Zaragoza’s bravery and skill, the Confederates never received the much needed European help they desperately needed allowing the North to eventually win and end slavery in the USA.

Other Interesting facts:

Largest pyramid in world is in Mexico in the town of Cholula

There are a few animals only only native to Mexico including the ocelot,  red knee tarantula, and coatimundi. The chupacabra is not Mexican but is supposed to be found in Puerto Rico instead.
