Circle of Trust

I wasn’t into them much as a kid, but in my 20’s I started to enjoy and appreciate musicals. I’ve seen quite a few, and the one I always come back to the most I think is Les Misérables. For those that were unaware I shared that it is a story about people in 1800’s France during a time of revolution. There is a group of young men who are protesting new government, and decided to build a barricade to block off a road, and face-off against the French army. With a fire fight imminent, and their demise likely, they naturally sing a song about friendship and brotherhood, called ‘Drink with Me’.

One part that resonates with me is as follows:

At the shrine of friendship, never say die
Let the wine of friendship, never run dry

We come together every morning and our ‘shrine of friendship’ may just be a bunch of cinder blocks in parking lots, but we definitely have the never say die attitude, and lift each other up in many ways. Our wine of friendship is usually coffeeteria afterwards, and sometimes like today, onsite chocolate milk.

We toasted to friendship, fellowship, and exercise. Remembered those we’ve lost, lifted up all the things weighing on our hearts and minds, and drank to a verse from the song.

Drink with me, to days gone by
To the life, that used to be
At the shrine of friendship, never say die
Let the wine of friendship, never run dry
Here’s to you, and here’s to me.
