Introduction

Ah, my VQ. In the virtual gloom no less. Preparing for this, I scoured over the F3 exercise list and stumbled across the Top Gun routine. I liked the idea and thought it would work well with Virtuosity. I think it turned out pretty well. I hear one of the PAX splashed merlot during the Beatdown, so I’ve got that going for me. Which is nice.

(Singlet was not an FNG, but not yet listed in directory.)

Circle of Trust

A global pandemic. Civil unrest. Riots. And the societal and economic impacts that go along with them. All of these have us in the middle of the most chaotic times we have ever collectively encountered. Yet, as leaders in our community, we need to remain focused and create calm and order amongst the chaos, whether it be at home, work, church, wherever.

I recently read an article on leading effectively during times of chaos. I liked several of the points it raised so I thought I’d share those with you.

#1. Default to responsibility. As a leader entrusted with a job to do, you must immediately take ownership and accept the consequences for failure. How many times have you seen someone try to pass the buck or make excuses for something they were responsible for when things don’t go as planned? Don’t be that guy. Don’t be afraid to take ownership. Read Jocko Willink’s Extreme Ownership for more on this topic.

#2 Have a bias for action. Hesitation in the face of uncertainty can allow for circumstances to make the decision for you. Indecisiveness will undermine your credibility with those you are leading.

#3 Always keep your cool. It only takes one unnecessary temper outbreak for you to lose the confidence and credibility you have established with those you are leading. Remaining calm amongst chaos demonstrates to others that they can and should do the same as well.

There is a great quote by Buddha that pertains to this:

“In the face of adversity, be grateful, for such opportunities do not come by often.”

Let’s pray:

Dear God,

Please help us to remain calm and give us the strength we need to lead during these chaotic times. Please also provide strength to all of those that are dealing with adversity or otherwise need you in these times, as well as all those thoughts in our hearts that have remained unspoken.

Amen

As this was my VQ, I was a bit nervous and wanted to make sure I had enough content to get us through the entire 45 minutes. The Virtuosity AO presents unique challenges because it is sometimes difficult to coordinate all PAX, so I went with OYO routines in my Thangs. It was extremely gratifying to lead today and I am thankful to all those that joined me. I am looking forward to my next Q. If you haven’t Q’ed yet, I highly recommend you do.
