Circle of Trust
Today is a tribute to Lou Gehrig on his birthday who again, was not only one of the greatest baseball players, a Hall of Famer, but is someone who showed up for 2,130 straight games. This was a record that stood until Cal Ripken broke it in the late 1995.
In honor of Lou Gehrig…the original Iron Horse…this is about showing up. Something you all chose to do today at 5:15am in the morning.
And in on honor of Father’s Day, for all the dads here or all of us who have dads, it made me think of my dad.
My Dad was a Mailman. For 32 years.
He grew up in the inner city of Chicago poor. Didn’t have much. We didn’t have much. I remember when I graduated high school I think he was making around $40,000 a year. My mom didn’t work…I’m one of 7 kids. There wasn’t alot of “stuff” to go around.
However my dad always showed up. I don’t mean just to work. I mean he came to all my games. Baseball in particular. He came prepared. And he came to teach. he came to coach. And he came to be a dad. Whether it was saying nice job or even yeah sometimes yelling at me…he was still there and he meant well. Now…we didn’t always see eye to eye but I look back and I’m so, so, so grateful he showed up. And I consider myself lucky to have had that experience with my dad. Because not everybody gets to do that. At least not everybody gets to do that forever.
Lou Gehrig died of ALS in 1941 and before in 1939 he gave this speech…
“For the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans.”
Gentlemen we have so much to live for…
As we go into Father’s Day weekend, even if we are fathers or not…
If we have learned anything today…
We have learned…
2,130 games or 2,130 reps will not last forever…
Lou Gehrig the Iron Horse himself will not last forever…
Even ourselves, our lives will not last forever…
But our actions, our effort, and our ability to show up will last forever…this is the legacy we can lead and leave behind every day.
And that makes us ALL the luckiest men…on the face of the earth…
Thanks for showing up today.
Prayers for Rusty’s friend son going through cancer treatment, Wetwipe who lost a friend recently leaving a family behind, my sister battling addiction herself…
Naked Man Moleskin
Even you can complete 2,130 reps between 5:15am and 6am…if you move quick. Nice work to these HIM’s who not only showed up but gave it AYG for 45 minutes straight. Happy Father’s Day weekend fellas.
