The Thang

We grabbed our coupon’s and headed to a completed snow covered field.

Six cones in a lined marked over 100 yards, lighting up the field like a runway or gridiron battle ground.

Thang #1 Breakdown

  • PAX lined up and started running in place with high knee chops. Once the Q called out “breakdown” the PAX dropped to the ground for a merkin and back up to running in place. (5 minutes)

Thang #2 Jingle Jangles

  • 1st Quarter:
    • PAX started at cone #1 of #6 and did 10 Bonnie Blairs. Repeat at each cone for approximately 100 yards. Sprint 100 yards back for time. 20 Curls OYO for rest.
    • PAX repeat again only they have to beat their team time otherwise, 20 Penalty Burpees. They beat it by 10 seconds. 20 Curls OYO for rest. (Times were around 90 seconds here)
  • 2nd Quarter
    • PAX start at cone #1 of #6 and did 20 Merkins. Repeat at each cone for approximately 100 yards. Sprint 100 yards back for time. 20 Curls OYO for rest.
    • PAX repeat again only they have to beat their time otherwise, 20 Penalty Burpees. They beat it by 3 seconds. Daaaaaaaang! (No Curls, Times were just over 3 minutes)
  • 3rd Quarter
    • PAX hit all six cones again doing 30 Big Boy Situps at each cone. That’s 180 Big Boys baby! Sprint back with one frozen back side and a nice cherry on top to take home. (Longest quarter, over 8 minutes)
  • 4th Quarter
    • PAX started at Cone #1 and sprint thru to Cone #6, about 100 yards. Do 5 burpees and sprint back for time.
    • PAX repeated and had to beat their time otherwise 20 burpees. They did by about 7 seconds. (Times around 1 minute here)

Thang #3 Hamburger to 2-Minute Drill

  • Hamburger – All PAX get on 12 facing same direction. Q tosses football up behind them and PAX have to get up quick, locate where the ball landed and the first to get it wins. All PAX who do NOT have Penalty Merkins.
  • 2-Minute Drill – Q is at QB running a 2-minute drive 100 yards to the next endzone. All PAX are at WR. If there’s a completion every keeps on moving in a hurry up offense. If a drop, that PAX has Penalty Burpees, if the QB throws it out of touch, the QB has Penalty Burpees. This crew went 4/4, 100% all the way down for the TD! Sprint back.

Circle of Trust

Here lies more of a story than statistics…

The BEARS vs. Packers rivalry dates back to 1920. While I did share some stats, I highlighted a 1941 match up which was the first of two playoff meetings the BEARS and Packers ever played. The next one would be in 2010 which reminded me about the time I met Jarret Payton, Walter Payton’s son, at a bar in Chicago. (RIP #34)

Jarret was a stud soccer player at St. Viator High School which is close to Wauconda High School where I went. He went on to play RB at “The U”, Miami and then the NFL. So when I saw him at this bar in the city, I immediately knew who he was.

The year was 2010 and everyone in the city was locked in to watching the BEARS play the Seahawks in the playoffs. If they won, which they did, they would play the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship.

After talking with Jarrett he said this to me and some friends, “Maaaaaaaan, my dad was always super focused. You know, people talk about his intense workouts, his work ethic, the hill, etc. But when it was Packers week…[he paused hard] my dad was a different animal. He was more.

You couldn’t even look at him in the eye that week. He was just locked in. I never saw him like that except when it was Packers week. He was on another level man.”

As a kid growing up in the Chicago area, hearing this first hand from the son of the player who you idolized growing up stopped me, and all my friends right there in our shoes. I mean can you imagine your dad is Walter Payton and you get to see this focus and work ethic all the time and then you see it up another level during BEARS Packers week?

This reminded me of a favorite quote, “you have to be at your best, when your best is required.”

This is what we bring to F3 everyday. What we can bring to our families everyday. What we can bring to our career. This is how we get better. We put in the work. We work to reach another level. It’s there. With practice. Deliberate and consistent practice.

So as we head into BEARS vs. Packers week to “start” a new year…I leave with some quotes from some well know friends and foes from “previous” years…

“I’m not a mean player. You’ll notice that I never pick on anyone with a number higher than 30.” -Mike Ditka

“Taylor, we’ve run out of timeouts. Go in there and get hurt.” -George Halas

“Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” Vince Lombardi

“The harder you work the harder it is to surrender.” -Vince Lombardi

“Never Die Easy” -Walter Payton

Keep bringing your best when your best is required fellas. And never die easy.

Thank you.

There ain’t nothing like the NFL films soundtrack by Steve Sabol and company…If I listen closely this sound is quietly playing in the back of my head. How about you?
