The Thang

Thang 1

The first F is for Fitness. So we started with a fitness test that I failed the last time I took it 8+ years ago in the Air Force. The AFPT is simple. 1.5 mile Run. Pushups (Merkins). Situps (Big Boys).

We started with the run. Timer was set at the entrance of the parking lot and we ran out ¾ of a mile, turned around and came back (OYO). The cheetahs among us who finished first came back and picked up the 6 so that everyone finished the mile and a half run.

We gathered in the parking lot and separated into two groups. Group 1 knocked out as many pushups as they could in one minute while group 2 cheered them on, and then we switched.

The last element was the situps (Big Boys). Typically this is done with someone sitting on your feet to help you out, but with COVID we didn’t want anyone that close so Big Boys were done OYO (again as many as you could get in one minute).

That’s the test (plus a waist measurement which we didn’t do for those following along at home)

Thang 2

Next we celebrated the 2nd F – Fellowship. For me this means just hanging out good men having fun, so we headed over the field, lined up along some baselines, and setup 7 games of Pickle using tennis balls. There’s nothing better than acting like a kid again just playing games for the fun of it.

After everyone realized we’re a lot older and slower than we used to be, we packed it up and ran over to the smaller holy hill for Mary.

Circle of Trust

Today we got experience what F3 means to me. The AFPT that I failed years ago was a real low point in my life. There’s no reason for me to have failed it, but I had simply not prioritized fitness and was out of shape and stayed that way for many years to follow. Thanks to F3 though, I can pass that test now (would have scored a 90 out of 100 for my age group today) and I’m incredibly grateful to have found my way back to fitness. The fellowship that has resulted from being part of this group is hard to find comparison, but the closest thing I have to it my time in the military the brotherhood that results from sharing common bonds and purpose with the people you surround yourself with. We all come from different backgrounds and may have very different perspectives, but in this group we are all hear for each other and are committed to acceleration. The last F is for Faith. On this hill is a symbol of my faith in a higher power. F3 is not a Christian organization, we don’t care if you’re a believer or have a different faith, all are welcome here. In general, we do believe in a higher power (the Sky Q) and this compels us to serve each other and our communities. As much I’ve been able to grow over the past year in my fitness and fellowship, it’s the faith that I’m most proud of and it’s because of the example set by the men of F3 Naperville. I’ve seen how we come together to support those in need in our communities through so many outreach initiatives and giving. I’ve also seen us rally around our brothers and their families through their hardest times in support Bump and his family and being there for Noonan’s loved ones following his sudden passing. While Fitness and Fellowship are good things, the greatest thing about F3 for me is how we live out our Faith and the love those that God has placed before us. I’m grateful for Trailer Park inviting me out a year ago to a workout that I didn’t want to do, but desperately needed. I’m grateful for the men who came out this morning and all those I’ve met along the way over the past year that have pushed me and I look forward the next year and the acceleration of F3 in my life.

Run if can, walk if you must, crawl if you have to, but never give up and never stop accelerating.
