Introduction

I wanted an opportunity to utilize the soccer fields at Black Panther – but to keep it “Ted Lasso” inspired, so no soccer experience was necessary. But I’d like to think that experienced soccer players got something out of the workout as well.

(If you’re not familiar, it is definitely a show you need to check out, but I digress…)

I arrived to Black Panther at 5am to set up cones. Why is it always colder at Black Panther then it is at my house? The world may never know. The PAX showed up on time and ready to go. My preblast encouraged everyone to bring a soccer ball, but extra soccer balls were provided for those that did not have one with them. The perks of being a coach.

Warm-O-Rama

  • Side Straddle Hops (20 – IC)
  • Imperial Walkers (15 – IC)
  • Good Mornings (12 – IC) – This was supposed to be 10, but apparently I can’t count
  • MOSEY ACROSS THE PARKING LOT TO THE SOCCER FIELDS WHILE DRIBBLING THE BALL
  • Alternating Toe Touches on the Ball (10 – IC)

The Thang

Thang 1: Dribbling and Merkins – Start on the end line of the field, dribble to the first cone, drop and do 5 merkins – then sprint back to the start. Dribble to the second cone, drop and do 5 merkins – return to the end line. Repeat this process until you reach the other end line – then sprint all the way back to the start. Do side straddle hops until everyone has finished.

Thang 2: Squats, Shots, and Side Straddle Hops – PAX stood in a line across the end line. Everyone started doing squats as the first person in line dribbled across the field and took a shot on goal. If they made it they returned to the line and started doing SSHs as the second person started. If you missed you had to return to the end line and do it again. Miss 3 times and there were 10 penalty burpees (by order of Pokemon). PAX continued doing squats until it was their time to shoot.

SIDE NOTE: My own shooting skills were lacking, but I wasn’t alone. I won’t call anyone out, however. 🙂

Thang 3: Throw-Ins and Bear Crawls – Start on the end line. Do a throw in. Bear crawl to wherever the ball landed. Pick up the ball and do another throw in. Repeat this process until you reach the end line – then turn around and do it again to return to the start.

We moved into Mary about 5-7 minutes earlier than usual

Mary:

  • Flutter Kicks (10 – IC)
  • LBC’s (10 – IC)
  • Hold Low Plank (30 seconds)
  • Move to High Plank – Plan Jacks (10 – IC)

We used the rest of our time to have a little 4v4 soccer game. At 5:58 we did another mosey back to the flags while dribbling the soccer ball.

Name-A-Rama

It was so much fun planning a soccer-themed workout. I have always loved the game of soccer – growing up playing the game, and now getting the opportunity to coach my son’s youth team. Soccer has taught me a lot about life as well. My high school soccer coach used to tell me, “Sometimes it’s easier to just be better than someone else, but it’s better to be the best you can.” This has stuck with me decades after high school. There is both a relief and a challenge in those words. The relief comes in not having to compare yourself to others. Sure, maybe you can outpace or outwork someone,  but the challenge comes if you’re still not living up to your full potential…it doesn’t matter if you “win.” BE YOUR BEST SELF – whatever that means for YOU in your home life, at work, and with whatever goals you set for yourself. BE THE BEST YOU CAN.

Naked Man Moleskin

Thanks to everyone who joined me today. I’ll be honest and say I was a little worried when the HC’s weren’t coming in right away, but I’m so thankful for the 7 PAX who joined me in the gloom.

All right, fellas, you gotta remember, your body is like day-old rice. If it ain’t warmed up properly, something real bad could happen.” – Ted Lasso
