Introduction

Switched up my beatdown late yesterday after seeing the rain in the forecast.  Looked for some other back blasts that were primarily under the pavilion.  I was not able to attend Dilly Dilly’s 1 year anniversary Q but heard it was a great one.  Took this as a base and then modified with some different exercises.  Went to The Ridge last night and chalked out the exercises on the pavement under the pavilion.  Thought I was good to go….

Showed up this morning, rain was coming down, and saw very quickly that almost all my chalk had washed away.  Oh crap…  Ran to my car to get more chalk.  Tried to lay down the exercises again and lets say that did not work very well on the wet concrete.   5:15 hit and I’m still trying to figure out what the heck I’m going to do.  My site Q Den Mother got the warmarama started with motivators.

Thankfully I took pics of all the different stations last night and made the decision to just communicate the exercises after warmarama.  Little stressful, but it worked out like it normally does.

One highlight is that I was able to take a picture of the Site Q during warmarama.  Doesn’t happen very often 🙂

Tappy Taps to 10

Arm Circles front and back – 10 a piece

The Thang

Pavilion was set up with 9 total stations.  8 stations around the perimeter and 1 in the middle.  Counted out the PAX by 9.

Perimeter stations

  • Dips using picnic table
  • Lawn Mowers – 10 each arm and then switch arms
  • Goblet Squats
  • Monkey Humpers
  • Curls
  • Box jumps onto picnic table
  • Derkins
  • Chest Press

PAX in the center were the leads.  Everyone in the center did 30 big boys.  At that point the other 8 stations stopped their exercises and the PAX in the center led one of the below exercises in cadence.  After this was complete, everyone rotated to their next station and the next round began.

25 SSH IC (50 total)

15 Mountain Climbers IC (60 total each leg)

15 Smurf Jacks IC (30 total)

25 Overhead Claps IC (50 total)

Shared a story of an interview that I did last week with a Chemical Engineering student at the University of Wisconsin.  Due to Covid-19, we were unable to go to campus to perform interviews which is a bummer on lots of different levels.  Not only do I love going back to campus, but being able to read the non-verbal cues from a candidate is very important to me to assess motivational fit within our company.

The student I spoke with is currently a sophomore and carries a 4.0 GPA.  Right from the get go it was clear that she is very intelligent, clear on the type of company she wants to work for, and probably a little nerdy (this is a term of endearment, as I resemble this 😊.)  What truly stood out about this candidate to me was her willingness to make herself vulnerable and describe how she is actively searching for ways to improve herself.  I will give a couple of examples:

  • I asked her to give me an example of a time which she challenged herself.  You would have assumed that she would talk about taking a difficult course or when she felt like she went over and above on an assignment.  Instead she shared with me how proud she was to take the leap to leave the dorms after her freshman year.  She shared that at times she finds it difficult to quickly form meaningful relationships.  Last November when people were signing leases, she made the leap of faith to move out with the friends she had made in only a couple of months of school.  In hindsight, she let me know this was one of the best decisions she has made.  She loves the time that she is able to spend with her roommates cooking and eating together and overall just hanging out.  This has really stretched her to invest the time to build long lasting, meaningful relationships.  If she would have stayed in the dorms, the strength of the relationships she has built would not have been nearly the same.
  • I asked her to give me an example of a accomplishment that you are very proud of.  She shared with me that growing up she was a “theater kid.”  Up until her junior year in high school she was on stage performing and then realized that she was a much better fit to behind the scenes on the production staff.  This allowed her on opportunity to harness her strengths but also mentor others who were performing based on the experiences that she previously had.  When she got to Madison, she was looking to continue this passion and also find an avenue to meet others like her.  She ended up joining the Wisconsin Union Performing Arts group as a stagehand.  This year an opportunity came up to help with designing and executing the stage lighting for 5 one act plays.  She had zero background in lighting and as terrifying as it was she knew in her heart this would be a great fit based on her technical abilities and her drive to make a positive impact on others performances.  By studying the reference materials, working with those more experienced, and through trial and error she was able to take on this task and excel.  In the end, she received excellent feedback from the performers and experienced lighting technicians.

After my phone interview with this student, I immediately called my wife.  I told her about the interview that I just completed and how I wished I would have recorded the conversation.  My oldest daughter is a freshman in high school and has struggled with self-confidence and a willingness to push herself based on a chance that she will fail at something.  I so wanted her to hear this great example of someone who recognizes her fears and insecurities but is willing to hit them head on because she knows it’s the only way she will expand her comfort zone.  One of my favorite analogies is that as humans we are rubber bands.  When you stretch a rubber band it never comes back to its same size.  As we stretch ourselves, our comfort zone increases and continues to expand as we are willing to push our boundaries.

The coolest part of this workout for me turned out to be having PAX who has never Q’d being forced to lead exercises in cadence.  I think this is something that initially freaks people out and potentially delays their VQ.  Hopefully doing this once will give folks the confidence to get on the Q sheet for their VQ.

Looked at the weather yesterday and it was 100% rain for the morning.  Already had my beatdown planned out.  We were going to be in the football field and on the hill.  My fear was that if I didn’t change things up that participation would be significantly curtailed.  I know F3 is all about toughness, perseverance and to get yourself out of your comfort zone, but I struggled with the balance of whether participation trumps this???  Ultimately made the decision that I’d rather ensure people came out to get better.  Who knows, maybe would have got the same level of participation?? Overall I struggled with this.

In total we got through 14 rounds of the thang.  Initially I had the center doing twice the amount of reps for the SSHs, MCs, Smurf Jacks, and OCs.  Quickly realized this was too much and shaved the reps off to what you see above.

Had an FNG for the first time in a little while.  Everyone welcome Munson (bowler, Kingpin reference).  He moved into Grande Park this summer and EH’d by Jellystone.  He and Jellystone were partners and I love the way he was pushing him and already has him down as an HC for his next beatdown opportunity.

Thanks Den Mother for having my 6 and leading the motivators so I could get my head on straight.
