Everyone hold PLANK – I’ll read an except from the Daily Herald, dated Tuesday October 2nd, 2001. I’ll call out various plank variations so listen for those queues.
Commander Dan F. Shanower, 40, combined strong patriotism with a taste for adventure and a wonderful sense of humor. A Navy intelligence officer, he had just begun gathering information on the World Trade Center attacks to brief his superiors when the hijacked plane that struck the Pentagon killed him.

In a secluded area of Arlington National Cemetery, the first military casualties of America’s new war against terrorism will rest together for eternity.
Nearly three dozen military men and women killed in last month’s attack on the Pentagon will forever be side by side in the nation’s most sacred burial ground.
Right arm up
On Monday, the 12th of those victims – Navy Commander Dan Shanower of Naperville, Illinois, – was buried amid all the solemnity America can bestow upon a fallen son.
A Naval intelligence officer, Shanower’s grave site overlooks the Pentagon, where the destruction caused by the September 11, 2001, terrorist assault was clearly visible to mourners.
Left arm up
The day began with a Christian service at the Fort Meyer Old Post Chapel. Friends and co-workers eulogized Shanower as a patriot, an officer, a writer, a traveler, a gentleman.
Upon the service’s conclusion, an honor guard placed the flag-draped casket atop a black caisson. The horse-drawn carriage then began a two-mile journey from the chapel to Shanower’s final resting place.
A Navy band led the procession, playing the Navy hymn commonly known as “Eternal Father.” Shanower’s parents and siblings followed the cortege as it wound through the cemetery on an unseasonably cool Virginia day.
Regular
Behind them walked nearly 250 friends and family, including Admiral William J. Fallon, Vice Chief of Operations of the Navy.
Once at the grave site, six sailors carried the commander’s casket to the decorated officer’s plot through a sea of white tombstones. His final resting place is in Section 64 – a secluded area rarely visited by tourists that is about a mile east of Tomb of the Unknowns.
Moments after the team put down the casket, a seven-man rifle squad fired three volleys.
As the shots echoed through the 612-acre cemetery, a lone bugler played taps.
Low plank
After a 15-minute service – which included the reading of a letter of condolences from President George W. Bush – the casket team folded the American flag into a tight triangle and handed it to Admiral Richard Porterfield, Chief of Naval Intelligence and Shanower’s supervisor at the Pentagon.
Porterfield presented the flag to Shanower’s parents, Donald and Pat, as the Navy band played “America the Beautiful.”
Shanower, who lived in suburban Virginia, was assigned to the Office of Naval Intelligence in June 1999. The Naperville Central High School graduate joined the Navy in 1985, later earning the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy Commendation medals and the Navy Service Medal.
He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal at the grave site.

Thang 3 – Jailbreak Bridge
Started at at westernmost bridge, north side, bridge by small brick “circle”.
2x at a time, Traversed bridge with called out method, over bridge, then form a new line, and come back, hold for 6.
Traverse 1st, don’t touch ground, hands and feet on railings
Traverse 3rd via broad jump.(too dangerous on wet bridge)
Traverse 4th via lunges. (No time)
Traverse 3rd via bearcrawl – stayed on south side of bridge
Once 6 was in. PAX were instructed, we’d all take a running lap around the sand volleyball courts and back to our position. Fastest person from the previous run will get “5-one-thousand” second delay to try to “Kill” (catch) as many of us as he can. However many PAX he passes/kills on the lap is how many burpees we ALL have before the next bridge crossing.
1st lap – Goldberg was nominated by YHC first (did a 5-one-thousand count). Killed…A BUNCH, we just estimated, 12 burpees
Traverse 2nd via crabwalk.
2nd lap – (PAX including YHC LOSING STEAM – NOT A GOOD TIME FOR Mugsy!) Mugsy won the 1st lap so he had “killer” position on 2nd lap….(he did 10-one-thousand count) we all paid the price. 17 kills/ 17 burpees
Traverse 3rd via bearcrawl – stayed on south side of bridge
3rd lap – Bjorn won 2nd lap so he was killer for final lap…we started at south edge of bridge, and PAX were told to haul ass back to flags…or MORE burpees. (Bjorn did a (15-one-thousand count) – still got us…12 burpees ( I think)

I did most of this COT at the 9/11 memorial earlier but I’ll just a quick few words here. It’s a pleasure to come out here this morning with you guys, thanks for busting your tails and giving it 100% this morning. Seems hard to believe 9/11 was 19 years ago today. I think most of us would say a lot has happened in our lives since then. You probably did some things over that time period that surprised you, you probably achieved goals, helped others, but that’s the point. So many were lost on 9/11 and haven’t had those 19 years. What a blessing they were. The question is, what will you do with your next 19? What will do you do to improve yourselves, to make yourself better for others, to help others, to make an impact? Take a minute today, a few minutes, go outside, breath the air, leave your phone inside, let the rain drops come down on your, be quiet and enjoy all that you have and all that’s in front of you. I’ve been guilty lately of making excuses for why I haven’t “dug in” with some opportunities to help, to lead, to improve. Having small kids isn’t an excuse, they watch what you do, it’s even more important to lead by
