Don’t wait until it is too late.
My first boss passed away on Easter Sunday. He was close to 90-years-old. I hadn’t worked for him in over 10 years, but always remained fond of my relationship with him. The first day I was an attorney, he pulled me into his office and said, “This is a great job; except you have to deal with clients.” It struck me as a bit odd to hear him say it, but over the years I have realized he was speaking the truth!
In any case, he taught me numerous lessons about professionalism and life. Once I left his firm, I ran into him at a Memorial Service for the Kane County Bar Association, and we decided to get together and have lunch. We met a few weeks later, and he said he was happy for me that I found a new firm. He said that while he was disappointed to see me leave, he understood that some times it is impossible to shake the “newbie” moniker at your first job. He said, some people will always see you in that light.
That lunch meeting was 7/8 years ago. For years, something would remind me of him, and make me think I should reach out. I would then move on to the next thing, and not make the call or send the email.
Now, it’s too late.
If there is someone out there that you have been meaning to reach out to – just do it. There are a million reasons not to, but for the most part, we each have 5-10 minutes to spare. Let this message be that push to call/text/email/tweet/etc.
Just don’t wait…
