Introduction

We got back to basics. Nothing but bodyweight and enough space to do a burpee in.

Until my calendar reminded me on Saturday that I was doing this Q, I had totally forgotten (that is why I have calendar reminders!) I groaned a little, because my MO for Qing is that I come up with some wild idea and then I grab a Q slot to put it into action. Not the case this time. This was past me knowing that after a week of Lincoln Games, and completing my final part for the CPA exam I was going to want to stay in bed for a week. Past-me wasn’t going to let future me do that. Past-me, I love/hate that guy sometimes.

Warm-O-Rama

We started with some tappy-taps, because putting my socks on in the morning is a chore until I get the kinks worked out. Stiff backs and creaky legs weren’t going to cut it for what I had planned.

Some side-straddle-hop got the blood pumping and hopefully brought up everybody’s core temperature, and some Grady Corns worked those shoulders enough that we weren’t going to snap anything hopefully.

Oh, and I through some good mornings in there somewhere….. because I’m a creaky old-man first thing in the morning.

The Thang

Tried to get right to the good stuff, because a solid pace was the main idea behind this beatdown. Here’s the basics. Deck of Cards has 4 suits, and we were going to do an exercise to correspond with each suit as follows

  • ♥️ hearts – 8 count manmaker/burpee jack (basically a burpee with a plank jack added in before or after the merkin)
  • ♣️ Clubs – Big boy sit-ups (sorry Flutie Flakes hope that’s healing)
  • ♠️ Spades – Squats
  • ♦️ Diamonds – Merkins!

The number of the card determines how many reps +10 we were doing for each set i.e. 2 of diamonds would be 12 merkins, five of clubs would be 15 BBSU etc.  No plus ten for hearts though, those bad boys don’t need the help, and I’m not sure my cadence counting would survive much past ten.

We did this all in cadence, and I’d hoped we’d make it through the whole deck before Mary, but there were about ten ish cards left when the time came for some flutter kicks, shoulder taps, and some Mahktar that we were saved from by the bell.

Circle of Trust

Today’s workout was mainly about just keeping moving. The work prescribed by anyone card isn’t that much, and as such won’t do much for you, but if you can execute and keep moving it adds up to something. Signing up for this Q today was about that for me–to keep myself moving. Somedays’ we may not be quite up to tempo, but we’re infinitely better off moving slowly than we are at a standstill. So, get up keep moving, one foot in front of the other. It’s the only way anything worthwhile ever gets done.

Naked Man Moleskin

I was thinking of Muggsy calling cadence at the black Diamond where he had us doing 500 thrusters and BBSU. I remember thinking that was alot of cadence to call. So today I thought I’d give it a whirl. I counted cadence for maybe 10 or 12 burpees at my VQ. Not saying it was easy counting cadence for those manmakers, but it was a hell of a lot easier than those burpees a little over a year ago.

PSA: choose your big-boy spot with care. Road surfaces are not your friend when you tend to move your butt…. or so I hear 😉  sorry about that….
