COT regarding a book I’ve been reading lately, “Born to Run”.  The book is about a isolated Mexican Tribe called the Tarahumara, but is largely about running in general.  On of the runners in the books says:

“I love the Beast.  I actually look forward to the Beast showing up, because every time he does, I handle him better.  You get him more under control.  Once the Beast arrives, I can get down to real work which is what I’m here for.  You can’t hate the Beast and expect to beat it.  The only way to truly conquer something is to love it.”

This is true for running or for the part of a beat down where you are struggling to continue.  We say Embrace The Suck.  The Suck is The Beast.  I felt like the quote from the book put some meat on the bones of how I previously thought of Embrace The Suck.

Evidence of “Loving the Beast” in the book was shown by some of the runners were in the worst parts of Ultra Marathon over a mountain and they were smiling.  I’ve been making a conscious effort to smile when I’m having those hard moments in a beat down or a run.

Naked Man Moleskin

Sweet Gherkins asked me questions about “Play” that I was not prepared to answer.  I had to wikapedia research after the beatdown and send the info out to the PAX.
