Introduction

Well its been awhile since I led a Run Club, and a Q was needed…couldn’t think of a better time to step up. This is the busiest week of the year for optometrists (as you slackers seem to forget your insurance resets in January) so I really didn’t have much time to prepare. What do you do when the 6 is the Q? Woke up to a frosty 29 degrees, took my “respect cocktail” of 2 Advil and a 5 hr energy, and headed to the AO early.

Warm-O-Rama

Personal warmup included a 1 mile run to see how the conditions were on the trail. New fallen snow froze the previous days slush, resulting in what was best described as “crunchy and slippy”, with black ice on bridges. This resulted in my first audible.

Pax Warm-O-Rama:

25 Side Straddle Hops

15 Imperial Walkers

15 Abe Vigodas

1 minute OYO stretch what you need…

The Thang

The one and only… Scout Run

Original plan was to run the 3 mile loop up over the bridge on 34, back behind the Baptist church to McCoy, then back through the trials to the parking lot. Having slipped (and tumbled) on the ice during my oyo warmup mile, realized bridges might not be a smart idea, so I audibled to a paired scout run around the lake. Each PAX paired with someone of like speed, and set off counter clockwise around the lake, turning back to visit the 6 at 3 different locations, ending with a group run back to the flags. Had to audible the final turning spot twice, but all worked out in the end. Pulled in right at 6:00…

Circle of Trust

I kinda winged the COT, and this is the recreation as best as I can remember.

As my time with F3 grows longer, I have come to realize I’m much more the Stoic than I thought. I am on several daily e-mail lists to help myself become a better me. Some of you may know that I got off social media prior to the election for that reason. I have recently gotten back on twitter, but am much more selective on what I follow and what I engage in. One of the newer groups I follow is the “Daily Stoic”. I thought two of their recent tweets were apropos for what we do daily…

5 Stoic Tips for Problem Solving:

-Separate what’s in our control from what isn’t. (Epictetus)

-Prepare for difficulty (Seneca)

-Realize: small steps are no small thing (Zeno)

-Don’t expect perfection (Marcus Aurelius)

-See every obstacle also as an opportunity (Marcus Aurelius)

The keys to a productive life…wake up early…limit interruptions…make a little progress every day…say no (a lot)…learn from your mistakes…pick yourself back up when you slip…waste no time measuring yourself against other people.

One of the other daily emails I enjoy is from Shift. It linked to an interesting article by Emily Willingham called “The surprising brain benefits of exercising with others. ” In her research for her book The Tailored Brain, she found that only two things really improve brain function: exercise and social activity. Physical activity rids the body of the damaging oxidants, and apparently over repairs, making us better than when we started. Social activity is important as we ARE social creatures: interacting together unburdens our mind and puts us in a better mood.

I try to keep up with these emails daily. My goal is to make my life better, so that I can make the lives of those around me better as well.

Prayer requests were for those battling COVID, and to those touched by the recent passing of soccer coach to covid.

Naked Man Moleskin

Its great seeing people step up to help. Love the fact Ice Tea has volunteered to be site Q in his “respect-respect” years… And its great seeing Fargo help him with technology    ; )
