Introduction

“I believe that the good Lord gave us a finite number of heartbeats and I’m damned if I’m going to use up mine running up and down a street.”
Neil Armstrong

Lincoln Game’s sure does reward running and rucking, doesn’t it?  Well, this workout had nothing to do with either.  To quote my old friend TBD, “When the Corona Zombies come for us, you aren’t going to out run them!  You better learn to stand and fight those zombies.”

This was an a real simple, boxing style workout.

Warm-O-Rama

“We can’t all be heroes because someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.”
Will Rogers

Motivators from 6

15 Tappy Taps in cadence

10 arm circle forward, backward, seal claps, overhead claps in cadence

The Thang

“It’s unnatural for people to run around the city streets unless they are thieves or victims. It makes people nervous to see someone running. I know that when I see someone running on my street, my instincts tell me to let the dog go after him.”
Mike Royko

15 Rounds – 2 minutes each (all exercises are done in cadence); During each shadow boxing round, 1 PAX would join me in the center of the parking lot and I would hold the mitts while they through punches. I’ll keep my comments on how they did until the naked man moleskin.

Circle of Trust

Since we are in the midst of the Lincoln Games, I thought it only pertinent to read up on our 16th President this week.  In doing so, I came across an interesting story.

In 1842, a young country lawyer by the name of Rebecca wrote a scathing article in the Sangamo Journal condemning the Illinois’ State Auditor’s decision to close the State Bank of Illinois.  Rebecca felt that this would be a tremendous blow to the rural farmer’s of the area who would now have to procure gold and silver to pay their debts instead of the paper money that had become reliant upon.  The State Audiotr, Mr.  James Shields, was not one to take such criticism lightly and publicly challenged Rebecca, the rural farmer, to a duel.  Shockingly, Rebecca accepted and the terms of the duel were quickly negotiated.

Since Illinois is not some backwoods, hillbilly bastion, the duel had to take place somewhere that was.  Missouri was chosen over Wisconsin or Indiana.  Since James Shields proposed the duel, it was Rebecca that was able to choose the weapon.  While most would assume this meant the type of pistol, i.e. double action, single action, muzzle loader, etc., Rebecca actually chose broad swords (“Calvary swords of the biggest kind”) on a plank over a pit.  As a man of honor, James Shields accepted.

The day of the duel, September 22, arrived and the combatants met at Bloody Island, Missouri. As the two men faced each other over the pit and on the plank, Rebecca swung his sword so hard and high that it tore through a tree branch nearly 7 feet above Shields’ head.  With such a tremendous advantage in strength and size, Shields quickly called a truce.

As most of you have figured out, “Rebecca, the country farmer” was actually Abraham Lincoln who, at the time, was a mere country lawyer.  A final interesting twist in the saga of Lincoln and Shields came some 20 years later.  Shields became a Major General in the Army of the Potomac after Lincoln personally appointed him.  He would also delivered Stonewall Jackson his only defeat at the Battle of Kernstown.

This is a bit thin, but I think I found a connection between this story and my feelings about the Lincoln Games.  Like Lincoln, I too wanted to write a harshly worded letter condemning the actions of leadership.  Only instead of criticizing government’s decision to allow a financial institution to cease operations, I was pissed that I had to run so much.  Like Lincoln, my complaints didn’t do a damn bit of good and ended with a fight (both figuratively and literally with boxing at 2 Wolves).  Also like President Lincoln’s story, friendships were created and strengthened through the whole process.  The moral of either story is that even if you hate every minute of this challenge, embrace it because you will either create or strengthen those friendships that you will be able to count on tomorrow, next month, or 20 years from now.

Naked Man Moleskin

Before I get to my scouting report, many thanks to all those who showed up but especially my crew from Iron Lion and my other crew from Black Panther.  To the ends of the F3 world came to support me and work hard.  Sincere apologies for the music dying in the middle of the workout.  I can’t believe I forgot to charge the speaker!

Round 1 – Appletini

Decent right hand, left dips too much, a bit of plodder – This is the kind of fighter that would keep coming at you despite missing an eye and having a broken jaw, very dangerous.

Round 2 – Sputnik

“Hey Nacho, this might be the first time I ever threw a punch.”  Quick hands, light on power, fearless – You would need to go for a knockout because he would out point you with energy and sheer number of punches thrown. Willing to try anything, he’s not getting scared.

Round 3 – Ken Doll

Ever want to fight Ivan Drago?  Seriously, watch Rocky 4 and you’ll get the scouting report on Ken Doll.  Just like Drago, if he keeps you at the end of that southpaw jab, you’re done for.

Round 4 – Switch

In all honesty, this dude is not 50 and is not an electrician.  He is a 25 year old up an coming middle weight, it’s the only legit answer.  Dude hits like a ton of bricks, real smooth movement, keeps his hands high – he can really fight.

Round 5 – Zima

On his first upper cut, he knocked the mitt off my hand.  This is a big, strong, heavy weight who’s fights end in someone laying out cold.  Needs a bit more wind but drops a right hand like a cinder block.

Round 6 – Pokemon

The real deal and can only assume he is the dominant force amongst his 10 year old counterparts at recess.  He bobbed, he moved, he swung with reckless abandon then with pin point accuracy.  Excellent work, young man.
