Introduction

Going in to Friday night it felt like we had been dealing with rain all week. It hadn’t come down during a bootcamp in some time though. A number of us had done the Iron Pax Challenge twice this week in the wet grass. The wonderful caretakers of Prairie Point Park aerated at some point this week and the muddy remnants were bouncing off our backs as we hustled through the grass. I said to the guys on Friday that my arms and knees were taxed and I would focus on some different exercises Saturday morning. No coupons though, I didn’t want to lift another block after two days of rifle carries.

PreBlast went up fairly early on Friday, but it was crickets most of the day. Pork Rinds called out a few guys and a couple responded. It was starting to look like a crew that could do some damage. Went to bed fairly early and there were a couple of lineup changes Saturday morning when I glanced at my phone. I had it in my mind what I wanted to do, but scrapped the plan and went with a new plan I threw together as I was doing an EC Ruck at BP before the 7:00am start. PreBlast updated, bring those coupons men.

Rain started falling during the EC Ruck, then stopped again. I hustled back to the lot to write the beatdown in chalk in the shelter. This would give some partial cover during the rain. Don’t worry, we were still going to get wet. Pork Rinds showed up and gave me a few ideas for the exercises. Quick bathroom break and it was time to get in an EC run with Pork Rinds. We went around the park and found Milton near the end. Milton decided to run home and get his coupon because he had not seen the updated PreBlast. Some of the guys saw the updated PreBlast, some did not. Good thing most PAX keep a coupon in their car. My favorite musician does not, but I let him borrow mine and I used a 40lb sandbag. Now write a song about that brother.

Warm-O-Rama

We kicked off W-O-R with some exercises to stretch out our bodies. You know, Abe Vigodas, Tappy Taps, Goofballs and some Arm Circles. As we wrapped up Arm Circles, the energy company guy arrived and joined us just in time to mosey around the lot, the course that will now be “Lap 1” for the beatdown. I asked the PAX what they wanted to listen to today and the limited number of responses that I heard was country. We grabbed our coupons and made our way over to the shelter.

The Thang

I settled on classic country. Not exactly the type of music to get you moving, but it felt right on this rainy morning. I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if some guys thought it was terrible. The beatdown was pretty straight forward I had a list of exercises that were placed in three different groups. The groups were Easy, Easier, and Easiest (Pork Rinds gets credit for this). Essentially, the easier the exercises were, the more running we were going to do. Easiest – 3 laps, Easier – 2 laps, and Easy – 1 lap. The laps were about 1/5-1/6 mile. One more thing, the first PAX to complete the exercises relieved the rest of the PAX.

These are the exercises:

Easy – 1 Lap:

  • 15 HRPCMB’s
  • 1 Mile Run
  • 25 Blockees
  • 50 Burpees
  • 100 Overhead Presses

Easier – 2 Laps:

  • 100 BBS
  • 100 SSH
  • 100 Overhead Claps
  • 100 Bent Over Rows
  • 100 Curls
  • 100 One Arm Rows (50 each arm)
  • 50 Smurf Jacks

Easiest – 3 Laps:

  • 100 LBCs
  • 50 Box Jumps
  • 50 Monkey Humpers
  • 50 Leg Lifts
  • 50 Oh Yeahs!
  • 50 WWI Sit-ups
  • 50 Dips
  • 50 Merkins
  • 3 Minute Wall Site – Passed the 40lb sandbag
  • 25 Bonnie Blairs
  • 50 Chest Presses
  • 25 Alpos
  • 50 Shoulder Taps

The PAX clearly didn’t want to run this morning, they picked the Easier exercises most of the time.

When the workout was over, my tracker said that I had burned 839 calories, definitely not the most I’ve done on a Saturday, but we had a good time getting stronger together. Oh yeah, the first song on the classic country radio station was by Conway Twitty. We heard some Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette and Hank Wilson too.

Circle of Trust

We were blessed with rain from the sky above. We thanked God for this beautiful morning and the opportunity to get stronger with our brothers. We prayed for Mr. Miyagi and some of our brothers that were traveling. We also offered prayers for others battling different forms of adversity and for the prayers that were unspoken. Amen.

Naked Man Moleskin

I thanked these men around me for tackling another hard week. The Iron Pax Challenge, the weather and our commitment to getting better.

Are you wet? This is almost always the first thing my two year old says to me when I walk in the house every morning after screaming “Daddy.” Usually the answer is yes, sometimes it’s the sweat, sometimes it’s the rain, and sometime it’s both. I love being out here in the rain with you guys. I do it for you and I do it for my family and my two year old knows that. My five year old used to say the same thing, but now she tells me not to squeeze her too hard because she doesn’t want my wet clothes all over her. I’ll never stop hugging these kids though, whether I’m wet or not.
