Introduction

Join YHC at Iron Lion tomorrow ITG for my VQ BD.  Bring running shoes(obviously) and be prepared for some mid-distance training to improve our VO2 capacity.

We’ll all run exactly the same distance and stay together, so if you’ve been hesitant to jump into BDRC, this may be a good intro.  SYITG.

WoR:  SSH(15 in cadence), Abe Vigodas, 1 mile warmup run at best 5k pace to the track at Benet Academy.

The Thang

5 rounds of 800 meter dash around the track at best pace possible.  Informed PAX that the world record in the 800 meter is 1 minute, 40 seconds.  To qualify for the high school state track meet in Illinois, you need to run 1:58.  Pushed PAX to try to run at 2:30 pace, but no slower than 3 minutes per 800.

3 minutes rest between each 800 meter run.

After we completed 5 sets of 800 meter run, we ran one lap(400 meters) around the track to cool down.  We then ran back to Iron Lion(1 mile) at same pace as warmup.

Once we arrived at IL, we completed 4 sets of 30 yard dash.

Mary:  American Hammers, Boxcutters

Circle of Trust

I was reminded by BabyHands a few days ago of the importance to push yourself to uncomfortable positions. Today’s workout was one of the first college track practice routines that I did 20+ years ago.  I remember the workout fondly because I hated it.  We ran 5 rounds of 800’s at 2:15 pace and I was dying half-way through the workout.

When my dad was about my age(30 years ago), he was in a tough place and weighed 290 lbs and was diagnosed with diabetes.  He pushed himself hard the next 2 years and lost about 100 lbs, which he has kept off for the last 30 years.  My dad had told me throughout childhood to enjoy the physical abilities while I could, because I would not be able to achieve the same things when I got older.  I believed that as a child, but no longer believe in mentally limiting yourself.  The 800 meter run is a mental challenge more than a physical one.  The best 800 runners believe they can continue sprinting when their bodies say then can’t.

Don’t sell yourself short be believing limitations that others place on you.  When you hit a plateau, push yourself to get uncomfortable again and the physical and mental gains will come with that uncomfort.

Naked Man Moleskin

PAX did really well with the 800 meter runs.  While planning the Q, I fully thought that someone would push a 2 minute run.  Most of us were in the 2:30-3 minute range, and may have fallen just over 3 minutes the last few runs.  All in all, great job by all.  There was some great mumble chatter that we don’t usually find during black diamond run clubs, which I enjoyed.  Thanks to the 17 PAX that came out!
