Prayer:

Lord thank you for the ability and opportunity to come and work out with these men.  Please help us to remember that God created us all equal in your eyes.  That we would be leaders in our household’s and to teach our children the value of diversity.  That our children would understand that what is important isn’t the color of our skin, but the quality of our character.   In Jesus’ Name, Amen

While contemplating what to speak on for COT I was making a workout playlist.  About song 3 it occurred to me that I had a blessed childhood with regards to Diversity.  I grew up in the south suburbs in a predominantly white town.  However the high school I attended served multiple communities and as a result by the time I graduated my high school was 85% African American.  This didn’t bother me in the least.  I was fortunate enough to have a family that taught me to value the differences we see in others.  Going over to a friends house who was black or asian was a normal occurrence for me.  It wasn’t until later in life that I realized how good I had it and how odd that could seem to some people.  This was a legitimate concern of mine when my wife and I were making our decision to raise our children in Naperville.  Were we going to raise Naperville yuppies!?  Absolutely not!!!

Recently I visited an old friend in Blue Island who owns a shirt printing company to pick up some shirts I had ordered from him.  I had my 4 year old son with me.  I enter the store to 4 black men hanging out with my friend (who is also black).  My son sees my friend and I hug.  He sees me interacting with these men the same way I would interact with any other group of men.  There happens to be another young boy there for my son to play with.  They run around the store playing the way young boys should.  I know for a fact my son does not see the boys skin color and the same can be said for the other boy while playing with my son.  If only that “color blindness” never faded!  I sat at talked with these men for a couple hours.  We reminisced about old times over a couple of beers.

It occurs to me that my normal may not be my children’s normal, but it doesn’t have to be foreign to them. The interaction my son saw is why we’re not going to raise Naperville yuppies.  Our kids take their cues from us!  They’re going to see dad doing everything he can to treat everyone with the respect they deserve.

My dad taught me at a young age and I’m sure it’s a quote from someone…

What matters is not the color of our skin, but the quality of our character.
