I think of Horatio Spafford, who lost his 4yr old son, lost his entire business in the great chicago fire of 1871, then lost his four daughters who died when their boat crossing the Atlantic sank. He wrote It is well with my soul when crossing the atlantic near the spot where his daughters drowned.

You may know the famous words: When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to know
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

I don’t know if words in a song written 150yrs ago will help … but I know that the persistence in Horatio’s faith is evident in the words he wrote. It’s that persistence – that whatever my lot, we KNOW certain things to be true.

Here’s what’s true for us: Everyday we get up early and commitment to our brothers and push ourselves is a day we get better. This push, this work in the face of hardship, it makes us better. It is “well with our souls”.
