Circle of Trust

Saw the movie SOUL. A Pixar film that won an Academy Award for Best Animated  Feature film.

It’s the story of Joe, a jazz musician who dies before a big break as a musician. In this movie, the question,”What are we supposed to do with our lives” by the main character.

Joe is – a middle school music teacher and a gifted piano player. He dreams of being a jazz legend.

Like Joe, many of us are haunted by the feeling that we need to find a purpose in life. I feel envious of those who have found their purpose by being good at something. Many humans think of fortune and fame as a way to happiness. Although, I doubt if any man in this circle believes in that horseshit.

We obsess over our careers, or our hobbies, or being the perfect parent, thinking that a wrong choice will take us off track of our goal to fit a perfect mould that’s waiting for us in the future: the us with a purpose in life.

Finding purpose is hard to shake off, especially in a void. We still think that there’s a meaning for our life to be found and that we have a purpose.

People need meaning, and if they are not given it, they may take extreme action trying to find it. Nietzsche said that man would rather have the void for purpose than be void of purpose.

In Soul the characters refer to “spark”. We think that our spark is the meaning we have for our life, it’s the thing that we’re destined to do.

But the spark is really the “spark of life” — the enthusiasm to live for the sake of living.

The “spark” is being able to live in the moment and appreciate it with all your soul.

Joe took for granted all those commonplace, quietly beautiful moments because he was obsessed with realising his purpose.
